The most common newbie mistakes

Post by Dafling on Wed Aug 14, 2013 4:09 pm

I'm planning to do a "hints" command, and the first thing to go there, is obviously hints for newbies who just started playing. They do lots of mistakes, but some of those mistakes happen again and again, with every new player. I think tips describing how to avoid such recurring mistakes would be very useful.

1. In your experience, what are the most common mistakes that beginners make?
2. If you had an opportunity to tell a newbie the most basic ideas on how to play, what would you tell him?

Below I am toying with some ideas on how hints could sound like, will appreciate any replies.

Here are some newbie mistakes (off the top of my head):
- not doing "x/vz ahead" when you have ball (resulting in ball loss)
- short C'ing (C has looong range, it must be utilized!)
- C'ing directly to the player, instead of C'ing in front of him (this ruins C+V goals)
- running into keeper with ball; shooting to keeper with X or VZ or whatever (keeper easily catches the balls shot into him)
- not passing at all; constantly losing ball
- using Z to pass to teammate who is far away (instead of C)
- sliding a lot for no reason (but I believe newbies have a "reason" - they want to tackle the ball, but it doesnt work)

We need hints that are easy to understand for a beginner, and easy to incorporate in his playstyle.
Eg. "Don't do short C" is a bad hint. It should be something like "Try making C at the highest range, because it is very powerful", but this also sounds kinda vague.
"Use Z for short pass, and C for long" is a funny hint :Dbecause you can see it on the icons for Z and C
"Do not slide for no reason" is a bad hint, because newbies do have a reason, - they attempt to tackle the ball.
"Do not shoot with X" is an incomplete hint, it's sort of denial, we should also mention how they could shoot: "Do not shoot with X, instead use V+Z"

I would say that the easiest way for newbies to score is C+V combo (C to teammate, who V's in box). But it's kinda hard, teamwork required, people tend to do C in a bad spot, they don't overshoot the teammate which is absolutely critical, instead they C toward his legs or something.
So we need some hints just on how to do a simple C+V combo.

1.Mb a tutorial as in founders of the north?
2."if ally is close use z is far pres c and target him"
"if you don't have the ball use V" Very Happy
"use c targetting ur ally if hes in penalty area"
"If you got the ball in penalty area use Z instantly."
"if enemy is trying to capture your ball, press X and target your enemy with it" Very Happy
"use your reaction and make your view comfortable using your inventory"
i think even complete noob who doesnt know english well gets it easily.

I suggest something like ''use vx when one on one with the goalkeeper'' (easier than vz)
''Avoid dribbling as last man (very risky)''
and of course the most obvious ''PRACTICE makes perfect'' (may encourage them to play more, who knows Razz)

Weeble, correct me if im wrong, but as i understand these hints are for "new newbies" if u can say like that. they dont even know x-dribble or such a great thing like vz or long C. for them vx will be miracle not saying about a goal with vx which would be recognised as godhack. Wink

tbh surely even newbs can recognise what a dribble / vz / vx / long c looks like? otherwise they will see others use it and should understand pretty quickly. These are still very basic hints, you can't really explain what everything is.

I'm talking about players who do not necessarily play with us. I'm talking about a casual gamer who tries warcraft soccer, finds it impossible to play, because he can't score, and he doesn't understand what to do in general, and then he abandons the game.

This issue has to be addressed somehow. Remember that FPVOD where people tried VX for 20 minutes without success? I think the hints we're discussing here should focus on such casual players as a top priority.

So we want to turn this game from being challenging and fun to easy to learn and boring to play?

Lets add a curve mode because we still have retards not knowing how to vz.  Logic.
